Nigeria has a strict anti-gay law in place since January 2014, during President Goodluck Jonathan's tenure, which carries a 14-year prison sentence for individuals found guilty of engaging in same-sex relations.

In a notable case in December 2019, the Nigerian government enforced this law by charging 47 men who had been apprehended by the police at a Lagos hotel the previous year. They were accused of publicly displaying affection for members of the same sex.
